Problematic internet use profiles and psychosocial risk among adolescents

Objective Although Problematic Internet Use (PIU) is an emerging area of study in psychology, little known about the unique features specific subgroups internet users and their psychosocial vulnerabilities within robust nationwide populations. Methods The aim this was to identify distinct latent groups based on PIU risk compare outcomes. To achieve this, a nationally representative sample adolescents same grade ( N = 1,066, Mean age 13.46 years, range 12–16) recruited from several schools Slovenia through stratified random sampling. Results A Latent Profile Analysis (LPA) revealed two-class solution, with Class 1 n 853, 80%) featuring ‘ low ’ participants 2 213, 20%) including high participants. Behaviorally, main feature denoted time management difficulties while best characterized by mood issues ’. Further frequentist Bayesian analyses indicated that presented greater compared due significantly higher levels (generalized across subfactors) coupled lower subjective well-being self-control. Conclusions Contrary what initially envisaged, two classes did not differ terms perceived quality parent-child relationship. This shows patterns symptom-severity may be developmentally specific, further highlighting need for clinically age-adjusted screening practices epidemiological healthcare settings.
